In my opinion, there are two top hotels in Antigua: Casa Santo Domingo, and El Convento Boutique Hotel.

Thought I would share my slightly more detailed thoughts on Antigua and Atitlan: The highlands also are home to the Quetzal. Look for birds everywhere you go, Lake Atitlan is Hummingbird central. The interior Highlands are chilly (for an ostensibly tropical locale), the less-visited coastal areas hot and humid. All worth doing again even if done before.Įlsewhere: lava fields at Pacaya, Quetzaltenango and environs. Would not miss the Mayan market in Chichi, also the amazing graveyard there, and the Cathedrals emblematic of the very particular and dramatic Guatemalan devotion to Catholicism (with Mayan flare). It was my first experience of a fireplace! In the dining room there my brother inadvertently tucked the table cloth under his belted pants so, when he stood up to leave. We spent a week at the then Casa Contenta in a cottage in the midst of glorious flower gardens. Guatamala is an exceptionally colorful, culture-rich, sometimes eerie unique experience. We returned twice more in the following decade. Memories made on that trip are some of my earliest. I was five years old in the mid-1950s when my family first traveled to Guatemala flying on a milk-run prop plane from Panama. You might think of adding Tikal to your itinerary. We were once told that public buses have security issues. It gets booked up far in advance.Ītitlan is incredibly scenic - we went there several years ago and stayed at the Hotel Atitlan which was a bit packagey in atmosphere but it had fabulous grounds and an amazing view. However, on both trips we thought the smartest place might be Meson Panza Verde - it is seriously stylish and while we have not stayed there we have twice dined there and thought the food several levels above the average.

At the Meson de Maria our next-door neighbour was the actor-writer Stephen Fry. I have stayed at La Casona and Meson de Maria and both were beautiful places to stay, the latter very near centre, the former a 10-15 minute walk away. I would say that while there are no luxury hotels in Antigua, there are several hotels of considerable character and charm. It's a lovely place, full of colonial vestige and of course that amazing volcano which dominates the town. I've been to Antigua twice, most recently in March this year.
